The Gospel of Matthew
Jesus, the promised Messiah
- Tradition
- Matthew, a tax collector who became one of the twelve apostles
- Scholarship
- Author unnamed; many date it later in the first century, drawing on Mark
This Gospel has traditionally been attributed to Matthew, a tax collector who became one of Jesus' twelve apostles. The book itself does not name its author, and many scholars think it was written later in the first century, drawing on Mark.
Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of promises made throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. It gathers his teaching into great discourses, including the Sermon on the Mount, and often pauses to connect events in his life to Old Testament prophecy.
