The Gospel of Mark

Jesus, the servant in action

16 chapters · 88 passages · about 1 hour

Tradition
Mark, an associate of the apostle Peter, traditionally the John Mark of Acts
Scholarship
Author unnamed; most scholars consider it the earliest Gospel

Early Christian writers attributed this Gospel to Mark, an early Christian associated with the apostle Peter, and said it preserved Peter's preaching; tradition also identifies him with the John Mark of Acts. Like the other Gospels it does not name its author, and scholars weigh that tradition differently.

Mark is the shortest Gospel, and most scholars consider it the earliest. It tells the story with urgency and simplicity, moving quickly through Jesus' ministry and emphasizing his actions, his miracles, and his suffering and sacrifice.
